Ajit Wadekar had to wait a long time to jump into the big league even after a string of impressive domestic performances. When his time did come, he grabbed it with both hands and soon established himself as one of the most dependable No 3 batsmen in the world. But it is for his record as captain that Wadekar is still remembered fondly.

He took over the captaincy reins from MAK Pataudi. This in itself led to high expectations as the Nawab had proved to be one the best Indian captains of all time. Wadekar was not bogged down and he was at the helm when Indian cricket reached dizzying heights in 1971. With series wins against West Indies and England, both away, India enjoyed unparalleled success and this was followed up with another series win against England at home. Wadekar was at the peak of his prowess, in terms of captaincy and his own batting.

The fall though came in England with expectations reaching a pinnacle, India were utterly humiliated in the first three Tests and eventually lost the series. Wadekar was forced to step down as captain and he retired soon after. He made a comeback into the cricketing fold as a manager in the 90s and
formed a good relationship with the then captain, Mohammad Azharuddin.

With the emergence of the breakaway league, the ICL, Wadekar was among the celebrated list of former players who offered their support to the league. Wadekar officiated as a match referee for a few games in the ICL and this forced a breakdown in relationship with the BCCI.

He walked out of the league in 2009 though and all was forgiven. Testimony to that was when in 2011 he was presented the Lifetime achievement award by the BCCI in their annual awards function.
